Non-profit firm, focused on child care and early learning, is seeking an experienced Director of Accounting to join their firm.

This is a newly-created role due to the growth of the organization. This individual will be the right hand to the CFO, lead the accounting staff (22 total) and provide guidance and assistance to Program Managers throughout the organization.

Responsibilities include:

• Direct accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger activity, maintenance of accounting files, tax accounting and reporting, fee collection, inventory, and monthly, quarterly and annual accounting statements and reports, etc.
• Ensure high level of accuracy in accounting data and reports; ensure a clear and clean audit trail is maintained to meet government, GAAP and funding source requirements.
• Work with auditors and fiscal reviewers to meet all audit and fiscal review requirements.
• Implement agency Fiscal Controls, policies and procedures related to accounting and fiscal compliance.
• Streamline the organization of the accounting department, work flow, policies and procedures to increase efficiency and reduce costs, including proposing improvements and implementing improvements.
• Assist, train and coordinate with agency program managers and other department managers to help them fulfill their fiscal duties, and to improve communication and work flow and to simplify their fiscal related work.
• Train agency managers and non-accounting staff in their fiscal functions, as needed.
• Develop, improve and maintain systems for training accounting staff and a “continuous improvement system” of performance evaluation to improve staff success, performance, efficiency and accuracy.
• Oversee or participate in the generation and presentation of internal and external reports, including assisting the Chief Financial Officer or the Budget Director.
• Assist the Chief Financial Officer to develop and upgrade the agency’s financial system, including written policies and procedures, on an ongoing basis.
• Communicate with bankers and vendors regarding fiscal issues as needed.
• Read and implement all agency policies and procedures.
• Accurately complete all assigned paperwork and documentation on a timely basis, and in accordance with agency policies and procedures.
• Work effectively with other team members and other agency staff.
• Assist the Chief Financial Officer as needed.

Requirements include:

• 7 years’ relevant experience in accounting.
• 4 years’ supervisory / management experience in accounting or finance.
• High level of organizational skills.
• Ability to independently identify problems, needs and opportunities for improvements; and to develop and implement plans/solutions.
• Proficient in Word, Excel and computerized accounting systems.
• Ability to correctly and efficiently communicate in written and oral English.
• A California driver’s license, the daily use of an automobile, and automobile liability insurance.
